“People, especially women, shouldn’t be expected to be demure and unassuming and reserved about our accomplishments.“ —Maggie Schmaltz. Women are socialized to grow inward and attribute their successes externally, when men are socialized to take up space and claim ownership of their accomplishments. Women shouldn’t have to shrink themselves or their 17 National Championships (or their social media presence) for the comfort of men, especially for the men’s UST basketball team who went 10-20 last season!!!! Exceptional piece, Maggie! I’m so proud to be your friend.
Great article Maggie! I know this is happening at other Minnesota Universities as well! I hope that articles like this will help create positive change!!
Dancing doesn’t make any money. It isn’t sexualized or marginalized. It’s an extra, it’s an accessory, it’s bling. It doesn’t draw a paying audience, it doesn’t sell tickets, and it sure doesn’t make anyone wealthy. So that’s why it isn’t afforded extra benefits, not for any other reason.
So true bestie! Wishing I had thought of and addressed/refuted this 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ ugh so mad at myself for overlooking that. We actually don’t deserve equal treatment, and I’m really glad you pointed it out! A lot of people are afraid to say it, that was really brave of you!
